The subtle art of knowing where you are does wonders

Hi world,

Emerald is here today to share a story. I attended a bi-annual event at Stanford Graduate School of Business for women leaders who are looking to accelerate their careers. Sunny and warm, the pasta lunch was served to us under a patio umbrella on a grassy lawn. I was sitting at a table of 7 women. Someone suggests a group photo so I sought out someone to take a photo of us, a camera in my hand. At a table next to us, I saw a person’s head.

[A] Emerald curious:
“Excuse me, sir. Could you take a photo of us please?”

[B] Person turns around:
“Sure”

[A] Emerald suddenly realize that this person I called sir is a she!
“I am sorry, could you please take a photo of us?”
In silence, contemplating whether to correct me by calling her a ma’am. Complex emotion, neither shame nor sorry - I feel ambivalent.

Emerald internal dialogue: ‘OMG, what I just didn’t know. How could I not know, this event is for WOMEN only!!’
Emerald internally smiles, laughing at herself and shaking her head with compassion for making mistakes.’

[B] She person:
Gracefully takes the camera and takes the photos — — snap snap snap.

Right,
- Beauty is being able to laugh at yourself for silly behaviors
- Beauty is gracefully ignoring other people’s ignorant behaviors
- Beauty is boldly going forward asking for what you need and being okay to make mistakes along the way.
